Get to know Laura Walsh
For 18 years, I lived and worked in Japan and Hong Kong, and after taking three Masters degrees in psychology, counselling and sport science, I became a licensed psychologist and sport psychologist in Asia. Three years ago, I relocated back to Calgary, Alberta and became a registered psychologist, hypnotherapist, licensed counsellor and EMDR therapist in Canada.
All through my life, my greatest passion has been sport. I was a competitive gymnast and competed for Canada in running, triathlons and adventure racing. And it was while studying for my Master’s degrees in Sport Science and psychology, I realized the power in harnessing the mind.
I believe the world is changing at a pace most of us cannot really sustain. I believe all addictions are based in unprocessed trauma, depression and anxiety are social diseases and ultimately we are all looking to be seen, heard, validated and to truly connect with people. I believe going forward, we will need to be resilient, able to adapt and most of all, achieve an emotional balance we have yet to achieve. I believe in the future and I respect the past. Thus the main therapies I use are more future focused with a bit of work in the past for context. These include Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Compassion Therapy (ACT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Mindfulness (including Hypnotherapy), Interpersonal Therapy, EMDR Therapy for trauma work and sport psychology for athletes.
I am a registered psychologist with the College of Alberta Psychologists, a licensed hypnotherapist, a qualified Mental Health Counselor and a certified EMDR Therapist. Currently, I hold memberships in the College of Alberta Psychologists, the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, the Canadian Hypnotherapy Association, the Association of Applied Sport Psychologists, the Association for Psychological Science and EMDR Canada.
